Description of the course:

• A panoramic view of the evolution of the topic of human rights in Latin America, with particular emphasis on Argentina and Chile, through the reading of literary testimony in different genres: narrative, poetry, theatre, film, and critical essays. The main focus is the connection between language, culture, literature, and human rights.

General Goals:

• Discuss and interpret a number of significant works of testimonial literature and film
• Analyze the language and structure of these literary texts in relation to the debate about human rights and the historical context (Latin American contemporary history); and
• Interpret meaning in literary texts, construct and appreciate alternative meanings, evaluate this type of writing and develop a critical position in relation to cultural production;

By successfully completing this course students will be able to:

• Evaluate the relation between human rights, language, and literature;
• Identify the sociopolitical movements and economic conflicts that led to the dictatorships of the ‘70s through the ‘90s in various Latin American countries;
• Recognize and discuss works of some of the most important testimonial writers and artists of the Southern Cone region during this period;
• Analyze the particular context in which committed art develops;
• Learn to challenge prejudice in their views of Latin American culture;
• Gather information and draw conclusions regarding abuses of human rights in our contemporary world;
• Delineate and produce creative projects, such as digital or paper magazines;
• Write essays in which personal, provocative thought is employed; and
• Trace and identify different dialects in the Spanish language.

30% Tarea: reseñas y bibliografía anotada (en portafolio)
30% Ponencia (10 minutos, vía Power Point u otros métodos cibernéticos) y participación en clase
40% Ensayo de fin de curso (revista literaria)

Biblioteca Virtual:
La biblioteca virtual de derechos humanos, lenguaje, arte y literatura incluirá textos de autores estudiados en el curso homólogo. En el futuro, la mayor parte de estos trabajos estará a disposición por vía virtual en formato .html y se podrá bajar con un formato .pdf. Por el momento, se presentan por el formato Microsoft Word.doc.
